SWISS ARMY BUS                       www.germanaircooled.com

1963 Volkswagen Kombi

This VW Bus served in the Swiss Army from 6 April 1964 until about 1982. The Bus severed as a Communications Vehicle. After the Communications Equipment was removed, It was then probably sold by the Swiss Government at an auction to a civilian. The bus must have been used as is for a few years. I purchased the Bus (with the engine not running) in Mannheim Germany in  Oct 1989.

This picture is the Bus as I saw it for the first time ,I bought it a few minutes later.

Veterama Oct 1989 Mannheim Germany

I rebuilt the engine and the bus was used in and around Mannheim Germany.

My two best friends Manfred and Christian and I shared the bus.

Christmas Time 1989 in our shop in Mannheim ,we removed the engine for rebuild. We also used some zink paint to help prevent rust.

(after the rebuild )

This is the engine that was modified (for the Swiss Army) to be used in a Military vehicle. Notice the Distributor is completely sealed and has a metal cover. The ignition wires have Radio noise suppression shielding. the Right side heater duct has a special adapter to accommodate a drive belt for an additional generator. (no longer installed) The generator has a waterproof box installed over the terminals. The Electrical system has Noise Suppression Resistors installed.

The Bus was well used and well maintained.

It did see some off road action, Manfred loves to drive off road.

In 1992 Manfred and Christian and another VW friend named Kurt (driving the bug) took a trip to Egypt.

They drove from Germany to Italy ,then took the ferry to Egypt.
